About SLES

 

Salt Lake Elementary School (SLES), established in 1970, is part of the Moanalua Complex Schools and celebrated its 45th anniversary during the 2015-16 school year. The school is a Title I school and receives federal funds with over 50% students in free or reduced lunch status. SLES enrolls approximately 700 students annually, serving students from Kindergarten through 6th grade. The school prepares children to be life-long learners through the direct teaching of the thinking skills and Habits of Mind. We pride ourselves with the motto: “Dolphin P.R.I.D.E. Practicing Respect, Integrity and Demonstrating Excellence.” The theme for this year is “Enhancing...Dolphin P.R.I.D.E". 

 

Students wear uniform school t-shirts to promote school spirit, pride and safety on campus. They can join one of six service groups: Junior Safety Officers, Conflict Mediators, Mall Patrol, Student Council, Library Club, and Campus Safety Patrol. Students get involved in many civic responsibility opportunities including making cards for nursing homes, recycling projects, donating to Pennies for Leukemia Patients and other charitable foundations. Student Council members are encouraged to do individual and group service-learning projects such as collecting and donating personal hygiene products to homeless shelters. The Music Enrichment Group, comprised of grades 2–6 students, enjoy singing and playing ukuleles and recorders. They performed at Ala Moana Shopping Center and Moanalua 99 for the winter and spring seasons. The Robotics and Jr. Lego programs (Grades 3-6) help students work together to research and build creative models and robotics designs. One of the Robotics Teams qualified and competed in the State Robotics Tournament at the Neal Blaisdell Arena in December. The Mini-Mac program gave students the opportunity to participate in an after-school video editing class with high school student mentors.

 

The School Community Council (SCC) continues to be actively engaged in the development of the Academic and Financial Plans. The PTA and SCC actively support an annual Talk Story with the Principal Community Meeting. The PTA is also active in fundraising and sponsors the annual Fun Fair to raise funds to support field trips and other learning experiences for the students and other school initiatives.

 

Incorporating technology in our school and curriculum is a major focus. We continue to focus on integrating technology in the classroom by students and teachers with over 600 laptops and computers on campus. Our goal is to prepare students to be ready for the 21st century.
